is celebrated around the world to commemorate the achievements, visibility and rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and other diverse sexual and gender identities. Pride month has its roots in the Stonewall Riots, which occurred in June 1969 in New York City, United States.
WHY CELEBRATE LGBTIQ+ PRIDE MONTH?During that period, the LGBTIQ community faced intense discrimination and repression from society and authorities. The Stonewall Riots were a series of spontaneous protests in response to a police raid on the Stonewall Inn, a bar frequented by the LGBTIQ community. These events marked a turning point in the struggle for LGBTIQ rights and equality.
Since then, the month of June has become an emblematic moment to celebrate diversity and promote equal rights for all people, regardless of their sexual orientation or gender identity. During this month, parades, demonstrations, cultural events, conferences and educational activities are organized in many countries to increase the visibility and acceptance of the LGBTIQ community.
The celebration of LGBTIQ Pride month also seeks to raise awareness of the challenges and struggles still faced by the LGBTIQ community around the world. Although there have been significant advances in terms of rights and acceptance in many places, there are still legal, social, and cultural barriers that disappear for these people.
It is important to keep in mind that laws and attitudes towards the LGBTIQ community vary widely around the world, and the response may change over time. While I can not provide an exhaustive list of all countries where LGBTIQ Pride month is not permitted, I can mention a few examples of places where LGBTIQ communities will face significant challenges or restrictions.
Some countries have laws that criminalize same-sex sexual relations or have laws that prohibit the promotion or support of the LGBTIQ community. These countries include Iran, Saudi Arabia, Nigeria, Russia and many others.
Why it is important to defend the rights of LGBTIQ+ people?
Equal rights for LGBTIQ people are important for several fundamental reasons:
1. Human rights: all people, regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, have the right to be treated with equality, dignity and respect. Equal rights ensure that LGBTIQ people have access to the same basic human rights as the rest of the population, such as freedom of expression, the right to education, the right to health, and the right to live free from discrimination.

Equal rights ensure that all people have the opportunity to contribute fully and without barriers to society, which enriches diversity and progress in general.
In short, equal rights for LGBTIQ people are fundamental to promoting justice, inclusion and respect at the individual, community and societal levels. Everyone should be free to be who they are, love who they choose, and live without fear of discrimination or violence because of their sexual orientation or gender identity.
